Nagano’s fall foliage isn’t just a single fleeting moment — it’s a season of contrasts, from serene reflections on mirrored ponds to the fiery colors of alpine forests. Whether you’re after iconic mountain scenery or quiet leaf-lined walks, Nagano offers some of Japan’s most diverse and breathtaking autumn landscapes.

Nagano’s mountainous terrain means the changing leaves begin earlier than in Japan’s lowland cities, usually from early October through mid-November, depending on elevation and weather. Here are our recommendations for best places to enjoy a brilliant display of color.

Yonako Waterfall Cluster

Tucked deep in the mountains of northern Nagano, the Yonako Waterfall Cluster is a spectacular autumn destination where fiery maple leaves frame thundering cascades. During fall foliage season, the forested ravine glows with reds and golds, creating dramatic contrasts against dark basalt cliffs. Cool temperatures and fewer visitors make this hidden valley ideal for hikers, photographers, and travelers seeking raw, uncrowded autumn scenery.

Togakushi Way Walk

Walking the Togakushi Way in autumn is a deeply atmospheric experience, as towering cedar trees and surrounding forests shift to rich shades of gold and crimson. The crisp mountain air and fallen leaves underfoot enhance the sense of pilgrimage along this historic shrine approach. Fall foliage season offers quiet trails and a timeless beauty that perfectly complements Togakushi’s spiritual landscape.

Kamikochi

Kamikochi, nestled in the Northern Japanese Alps, is one of Nagano’s most iconic fall foliage destinations. Surrounded by towering peaks such as Mount Hotaka, the valley transforms into a radiant canvas of gold, amber, and crimson. The larches, maples, and birches are especially vibrant in early to late October. Kamikochi’s high elevation means cooler temperatures and earlier leaf color, so plan for crisp weather and sturdy footwear if you’re exploring the trails.

Shiga Kogen

Shiga Kogen is one of Japan’s largest ski-resort and mountain areas, but in autumn it’s a paradise of changing leaves. The region’s varied elevations — from around 2700' to over 8000' — mean a longer foliage season, with colors appearing first at higher altitudes and progressing downward.

Senjojiki Cirque

For those seeking dramatic mountain scenery, the Senjojiki Cirque near Komagane offers one of Nagano’s most striking autumn displays. At over 8500', the cirque’s steep rocky walls provide a dramatic backdrop for dazzling red and bronze foliage. Senjojiki is ideal if a trip is early in the season.

Karuizawa

Karuizawa, a popular highland resort town, offers autumn foliage that’s perfect for scenic views combined with easy access, cafes, shopping, and casual cycling. Karuizawa’s foliage typically peaks from mid-October to early November, making it ideal for a relaxed day trip or overnight stay.

Matsukawa Gorge & Yamada Onsen

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, the Matsukawa Gorge and nearby Yamada Onsen area offer gorgeous autumn views along rivers, bridges, and waterfalls. Mid to late October is usually best here, making this area perfect if you’re exploring Nagano City and want a scenic, nature-rich detour.

Komoro Castle Ruins

For those who love combining culture and nature, Komoro Castle Ruins (Kaikoen Park) is a delightful pick. The castle grounds, with moss-covered stone walls and old trees, blaze with autumn color in early to mid-November.
