Why girls trips should be covered by health insurance

Why ‘girls trips’ should be covered by health insurance

Yesterday, I read an article about how important friendships and strong social connections (not social media connections!) are to our health. Apparently, even those of us who are introverts and need quiet time to recharge, thrive on our bonds.

I have experienced this myself many times, most intensely when traveling with other women. For some time, I went on an annual girls trip with the amazing women married to my husbands five brothers (no, that doesn’t make them my sisters-in-law). The six of us went to Cancun, Santa Fe, New Orleans and New York. We would go home absolutely exhausted and sleep deprived, but energized and fulfilled. There is just something healing about being with other women.

A few years ago, a small group of us - all women - climbed Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. More than a girls trip, that adventure was transformational. Away from our devices and the demands of our everyday lives, we were free to listen to each other and to our own thoughts without distraction. As we slogged ever upward, we faced our performance anxiety together and supported each other. We all made it to the summit. For a couple of years afterward, we would reach out on the anniversary of our summit day; it felt good to reminisce.

In September, 2019, a group of women are going to stay on a farm in the hills above the Amalfi coast. There, we will be day hiking, taking cooking lessons, drinking local wine, but mostly, just being together. We’ll explore Capri and the Blue Grotto, shop and probably eat a bit too much. Most of us won’t know each other before the trip, but I am certain by the end of it, we’ll be friends. And we’ll come home feeling great.
